Schools Choosing the Best School Knowledge Box

University Places Dominated Private, or Academically selective Government schools, are taking 7 out of 10 undergraduate positions at The University of Melbourne. A survey of enrolments for 2006 has found that 17 out of 20 available positions at the Melbourne University came from schools that include:
- Melbourne High School (government selective school)
- MacRobertson Girls' High (government selective school)
The results of the survey indicated that Victorian university intakes were very heavily skewed in favour of private schools and suggested that middle Australia had lost confidence in the public education system. Almost half of The University of Melbourne's first year intake came from independent schools. Thirty five percent came from government schools and seventeen percent came from Catholic schools. In the same year Victoria's school population of year 12 students was: government 57%, Catholic 22% and 20% of the population were enrolled in independent schools.
In 2006, government school student populations were from a very wide social, cultural and economic background and as such the further cost of study was a disincentive to some. However, as independent schools are much better resourced and are focused on a university education they are creating a virtual monopoly on access to Monash and Melbourne Universities. The Monash University undergraduate courses intake for 2006 was 43% government schools, 33% independent with Catholic schools providing the balance.
