DIY Removals
On the surface DIY relocation seems to be the cheapest alternative but is it the most cost effective? Using friends and relations to help with the move saves some money but professionals are often quicker and more efficient at getting the job done. Potential health risks should also be considered. Strained backs and other injuries can result from inexperienced people undertaking specialised physical work.

Also to be taken into consideration is the number of trips that will need to be made if a smaller truck is being used, as will usually be the case with non-professional movers. Professional removalists will have access to much larger vehicles, minimising the number of trips needing to be made.

Extra costs such as petrol and lost earnings for time taken off should also be taken into account when calculating the cost of DIY relocation.

Personal injury
Instruct any non-professionals who are helping with the move on the techniques of heavy lifting to avoid back injury. Be aware of any potential liability from injured workers.

Have a first aid kit on hand to cater for small injuries. Do not allow someone with a bleeding wound to work. Wash blood from surfaces and disinfect.

Package and wrap with care

Take some time to check that everything has been packed well to minimise breakages. Expensive items such as artworks should be insured with a general insurance policy to cover the move should be given serious consideration.

Emotional stress and strain
The emotional pressure of doing DIY relocation should not be underestimated. Take into consideration the hidden cost of this emotional stress and strain. Be sure to allocate some time after the move for a short break to recover from the stress of moving. Be careful when choosing a team of volunteers. If stress starts to reveal itself either rest or quit for the day.

Refreshments and alcohol
Refreshments can often be a hidden cost, both financially and time wise. Alcohol and work don't mix. Choose refreshments carefully. Ensure you have refreshments that are adequate for the volunteers especially if it's a hot day.

Insurance
Ensure there is a current insurance policy that will cover any breakages. Other eventualities that should be covered by insurance include any accidental injury to people helping with the move and damage of goods in transit. It is important to be aware that goods stolen from unlocked cars are not covered by insurance.
