Carton Packing
Being organised when packing boxes makes it safe, practical and easy: easy to find and easier on your back. Packing boxes is actually harder on your back than lifting and carrying them so taking note of a few tips to make packing easier and to avoid backache is essential.

Preparation

  • Clear an area, such as the garage, where packed cartons can be stacked. Remember Don't block doorways with either packed cartons or with furniture
  • Set up a packing headquarters opposite or adjacent to the stacking area
  • Consider using plastic storage tubs with lids instead of cardboard boxes. They are often inexpensive and available in a variety of sizes. These storage tubs are sturdy, stackable and waterproof, so they are useful even after the move
  • Hire a trolley for moving heavy items. They're not expensive and they not only save lots of time but can also prevent injuries
  • Wear some heavy gardening gloves to help protect your hands when handling heavy items
  • Place any fasteners for disassembled furniture in a sealable, labelled bag and tape or tie it to the item
  • Remove the plate from the microwave and tape the door shut
  • Pack sharp tools with plenty of padding taped around them and make sure the box is clearly labelled to prevent injury when unpacking
  • Ensure that you are well stocked with packing materials.
  • Have plenty of paper on hand as well as all the other necessary packaging materials such as tape.
  • Reserve a couple of carton spots on the table. Pack all cartons on the table to avoid bending over and causing back strain. Do not pack boxes on the floor.
  • Divide empty cartons into groups such as heavy duty, light or small to ensure boxes don't break in the move.

Box manifest system

  • Draw a floor plan of the new home and give each room a room number and name.
  • Give each box a number that corresponds to the manifest detailing the contents.
  • Place a copy of the manifest in each box and a copy on the outside of the box.
  • Keep a master manifest with a record of all box numbers and corresponding room numbers.
  • Secure the base of the box with plenty of packing tape, then place packaging material in the bottom of the box to provide support for the contents.
  • Pack a mixture of light and heaving items in the box to keep each to a manageable weight. Ideally the weight should not exceed 20 kilos.
  • Once the boxes are full secure the top with tape and add the box to the manifest. Make sure the room number and contents are included in the manifest and on the box.
  • Remember to always lift boxes by bending the knees and keeping the back straight.
On moving day take the boxes directly from the truck to the room marked on the box. Check boxes against the manifest and the move will be well organised with a minimum of confusion.
