Moving House Checklist Moving house is stressful but if you spend the time to prepare, it will save you annoyances in the long run. Use our moving checklist to make sure you're organised.
Two months before moving Sort through your belongings and throw out any unnecessary items. Moving junk to your new house that you will only throw out later is a waste of time and money.
- Organise a garage sale and sell any unwanted items that might still be worth money.
- At this point you should decide whether you are going to hire a removalist or whether you are going to do the move yourself. Once you've made the decision, book the removalist, or the rental truck if you've decided to do it yourself. Remember to ask for a quote from at least three removalists.
- Gather packing supplies: boxes, packing material, tape, tape dispenser, felt markers.
- If you're moving a long distance, make travel arrangements with the airline, hotel, and car rental company if necessary. If you're driving to your new home, plan your trip using a map.
- Place your legal, medical, financial, and insurance records in a safe and accessible place. You should make a duplicate copy of everything.
- Purchase insurance coverage for any valuables.
- Save all moving receipts, because some moving expenses may be tax deductible. You may also need them to make a company expense claim.
One month before moving
- Book a self-storage unit to store excess belongings.
- Start packing items that aren't regularly used such as out-of-season clothes and decorations as well as items in storage (garage, attic, and wardrobes) and take them to the self-storage unit.
- Make travel arrangements for your pets if necessary.
- If you're driving a long distance, make sure you car has been recently serviced.
- Obtain medical records from your doctors, dentist, optometrist, and veterinarian.
- Send rugs, drapes, clothing, quilts and bedding to the dry cleaners.
- Back up important computer files. Send a spare copy of the your financial records to your accountant.
Two weeks before moving
- Contact your utility companies (gas, electricity, water, pay television, and telephone service providers) and notify them of your move.
- Sign up for services at your new address. This can often be done at the same time as cancellation with your current supplier.
- Call friends and family and recruit help for the moving day if necessary.
- Confirm your travel reservations.
- Arrange to close or transfer your bank account if appropriate. Remove any items you may have stored in a safety deposit box.
One week before moving
- Pick up items from the dry cleaners, repair shops and friends.
- Pack a survival kit of clothes, medicines, special foods, and so on to carry you through the day after you arrive in your new home.
- Finish packing all boxes. Remember not to pack items you'll need in the final week.
- Inform the post office of your upcoming move. Australia Post Moving Services can do the following for you free of charge: send change-of-address notice and advice of new address to friends and family, banks, insurance companies, credit card companies, magazines and newspapers, doctors, lawyers accountants, real estate agents, government agencies and other service providers.
