Renting a Truck
It doesn't cost much to rent a truck but there are responsibilities both legally and practically that need to be followed.
Licensing requirements In Victoria, a car licence permits the bearer to drive a vehicle of up to 4.5 tons before being required to seek licence endorsement. Drivers of vehicles over 4.5 tons need to contact Vic Roads for the regulations governing endorsed licences.
Safety Considerations
People who have never driven a large vehicle before should seriously consider the safety of driving a large truck for the first time. An overloaded truck driven by an inexperienced driver is a recipe for disaster. If the decision is made to hire a truck, be sure to check where all the controls are and to adjust mirrors before setting out. If in any doubt about your competence as a driver, be sure to hire a removalist instead.
Size matters To move a household consisting of a living room and one bedroom will require a three-metre truck or a ute tray. To move a household of two bedrooms and living areas where four people live will require a truck of at least five metres in one trip. For any moves of above two rooms it is always advisable to hire a removalist.
Plan the Route
Plan a route to the new home using a program like whereis.com. Print the plan and take a test drive in order to safely negotiate any hazards when doing the trip in a truck. This way there will be no surprises when driving an unfamiliar vehicle. Make a special note of any height hazards such as low bridges and overhead powerlines.
